EDS: Not for use before 0100 AEST Thursday, August 18

SYDNEY, Aug 18 AAP - Young Australians are showing worrying signs of ignorance about
their sexual health.

A survey of more than 1000 18 to 35-year-olds found many were in the dark about Pap
smears, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and how the contraceptive pill works.

One in 10 men believed the pill protected a woman against STIs such as gonorrhoea and
chlamydia, while one in five did not know STIs could affect their fertility.

Nearly half of all those surveyed wrongly believed Pap smears for cervical cancer could
also pick up STIs.

The survey, carried out in July for private health insurer Bupa, also found four in
10 young Australians did not know when a woman was most likely to fall pregnant.

"The level of misinformation about sexual health should be a concern, particularly
given recent figures which show the incidence of STIs has been increasing again in Australia,"

Bupa's head of clinical advisory Dr Stan Goldstein said.

VIC:Vic granny jailed for killing husband

By Daniel Fogarty

MELBOURNE, April 20 AAP - A Victorian grandmother who killed her husband after he constantly
demanded kinky sex has been jailed for 11 years.

Eileen Mary Creamer, 53, was the first Victorian woman to be found guilty of defensive homicide.

She bashed her husband David, possibly with a South African tribal stick, before stabbing
him in the abdomen during a fight at their Moe home in February 2008.

During her Victorian Supreme Court trial, Creamer said her husband made constant demands
for unusual sex that she felt she could not refuse. They included her having sex with
other men in front of him.

She said her husband had been violent and abusive to her in the lead-up to his death.

On Wednesday, Justice Paul Coghlan said the Creamers had a "largely, if not entirely
dysfunctional" relationship.

He said both Creamer and her husband had other lovers.

Justice Coghlan noted that Creamer spent the night with her lover in the days before
she killed her husband.

Creamer's version of the killing did not accord with the known facts and she said things
to the jury that she had never mentioned to any other person before giving evidence, he
said.

The crime was a serious example of defensive homicide and David Creamer was struck
by a number of blows to the head "in what can only be described as a very severe beating",
Justice Coghlan said.

But, he said, Creamer was placed in a very difficult situation by the relationships
her husband was engaged in.

The jury during the trial heard that Creamer sent a used condom to one of her husband's
lovers, with a note that read: "Just to tell you how good it was with David. He could
not get enough. You're not woman enough for him. Ha ha ha ha".

She also contacted psychics and asked for their help to win her husband back.

Prosecutors argued Creamer murdered her husband because he planned to leave her and
return to his first wife in South Africa.

A jury found Creamer not guilty of murder but guilty of defensive homicide.

Justice Coghlan ordered South African-born Creamer, who is also a former New Zealand
resident, serve at least seven years in prison before being eligible for parole.

She has already served nearly two years in custody.

When reality TV bites

When reality TV bites
Byline: Audrey Vijaindren
Edition: New Sunday Times
Section: Main Section
Column: Sunday spotlight

EXPERTS and society are quick to notice cigarette, alcohol, drug and sex addiction. However, certain TV programmes can be just as dangerous and damaging, discovers AUDREY VIJAINDREN.

"THERE'S no way producers can create a reality show from that idea!" That's the initial thought. You then tune into the first episode to check out just how silly the concept is.
At the end of the hour, you vow never to waste your time on that show again. However, before you know it, friends and family are talking about it and you find yourself conveniently plonked in front of the TV week after week.

Although TV addiction has been around for a long time, reality TV addiction is something new, International Psychology Centre consultant psychologist Avis Ng Weng Suan says.

But it's catching on.

Ng believes that if reality show addiction goes unchecked, it could lead to serious physical, mental and emotional problems.

"The issue is escalating, although it's difficult to gauge what stage we are at right now. When someone spends an excessive amount of time watching TV and can't kick the habit, no matter how hard, that is a sign of addiction.

"One of the main reasons this addiction is becoming more common is because of the availability of reality shows.

"Over the past couple of years there have been a mushrooming of TV channels, reality shows, Internet forums and bloggers who discuss every single episode of these shows.

"Even parents believe that they are doing their children good by allowing them to watch hours of educational programmes or cooking reality shows.

"These days you rarely find children reading books or solving puzzles. The problem may be more serious than we think. Recently, a Japanese study revealed that children are prone to epileptic seizures because of too much TV time."

Although children and teenagers are more susceptible to TV addiction, Ng says, adults should be as cautious.

"Adults hooked on reality shows isolate themselves socially, which could lead to obesity. They also develop an inability to communicate. In some extreme cases, their addiction could also lead to depression."

Ng says Chinese TV serials have always been around, but it was more of a family thing.

"Reality TV is a new introduction to an old problem. It still does not promote real conversation. TV scenes may show kids what to do, but it doesn't show them how to act upon those feelings.

"Ultimately, you don't have a good relationship with family members. Indirectly, this could lead to other addictions, such as drug and alcohol. We are formed to communicate with people, not with the TV or robots.

"We have rational needs that need to be met, such as to be loved and understood. If you spend 60 per cent of your time in front of the TV, you will lack social interaction. Before you know it, you'll develop social anxiety."

Someone with social anxiety feels self conscious. Even a dinner alone at the local mamak stall can be frustrating and scary.

"In many instances, reality TV is a form of escapism. You're looking at somebody else's life instead of yours. When a viewer watches a reality show, they create a projection of themselves. They admire a certain role or character because they themselves lack those traits.

"In a nutshell, you play your life through someone else's life. That admiration could easily turn into idolism.

"What's worse is when the person is suddenly eliminated, it can be disappointing. Most of the time the addict does not know what to do with themselves. Emotionally, they feel upset.

"Eventually, they may find someone else to project through another show. Projection is common because it reflects self-esteem. It's not a two-way relationship, it's just a substitute."

Monash University Malaysia clinical psychologist and senior lecturer Paul Jambunathan believes that reality shows aim to sell emotions.

"Why do we watch movies? It's because we identify with all the emotions they express. The whole thing about film is the sale of emotions. We identify with reality shows like a puzzle we want to solve in our heads.

"Take for instance Indian movies, the story line spans over every emotion we can think of. There are moments of happiness, sadness, pregnancy and dying. It's a business of selling emotions.

"Another big lure of reality shows is the ability to judge people. The producers edit and `beep' a lot of stuff. Unfortunately, we are becoming more and more emotionally detached.

"If you want reality TV, take your family out, enjoy nature, get rid of your family problems, leave the phone at home, get lots of mirrors and deal with your own issues.

"You want reality TV? Put a camera in every room of your house, now that's reality."

Jambunathan says that if you are a junkie, the signs are obvious.

"Ask yourself whether you would choose something else besides what you usually eat, like roti canai. If you must have that, although there are other available options, then you have a problem.

"In the same way, if others have something they want to watch and you don't allow it, then there may be a problem already."

Why watch reality shows?

"I love watching the Giuliana & Bill reality show because it's so fun. I prefer most reality shows compared with shows like CSI because I can relate to them better. It's more real although I know there is a script, but it's entertaining. Serious shows are not so exciting.

"At first, my husband was not a fan, but after watching some of the shows with me, he is also hooked. He does feel as though some of the shows are lousy, but he watches it just to keep me company most of the time."

Ermie Ismail, 30

engineer

"I'm a huge fan of the Bachelorette reality show. For whatever reason, it's soothing to watch someone else's personal life and the drama that goes along with it. Of course, most of it is fake, purely made for entertainment, but at least it doesn't involve much thinking.

"I'm not sure whether I am hooked to reality shows, but it is entertaining and relaxing, especially after a long day at work."

Carrie Geraldine Aralis, 28

teacher

"The Biggest Loser is my personal favourite. It does not encourage me to lose weight or exercise more, but the drama is quite fun to watch.

"I don't think reality show addiction is a huge problem in Malaysia. After all, we don't have that many shows compared with the US. However, it will probably get worse in the future."

Zeeshan Siraj Din, 33

teacher

"Why do we eat potato chips? It's a guilty pleasure but we do it because we enjoy it. I suppose it's just one of those things.

"My life does not revolve around these shows, but if it is on I'll catch it. It's definitely scripted, that's for sure.

"But if I have kids, I would make sure they don't watch most of these shows.

"Many of these shows don't teach kids respect, especially Keeping up with the Kardashians. It doesn't instil good values. I would hope that our youth are not too focused on these programmes."

SYDNEY, Aug 23 AAP - Main stories in Monday's World Today:

* As votes continue to be counted in several seats across the country, it looks as
if both Labor and the Coalition will be deadlocked with 73 seats each as three of the
independent candidates head to Canberra to negotiate forming a government. Both parties
have publicly promoted their policy platforms in a bid to win over independent support,
with the Labor Party pushing its national broadband network and the Coalition arguing
the government has lost its legitimacy.

* South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon says the latest election campaign was frequently
trivialised and didn't deal with core issues. Xenophon says the presence of three independent
candidates in the lower house will provide democracy with a breath of fresh air and lead
to more conscious votes.

* Former NSW Labor minister Rodney Cavalier says support for Labor collapsed in Saturday's
election but disagrees that the dumping of Kevin Rudd was the reason for the swing against
the party. Cavalier says he thinks anybody who calls the election right now is doing so
far too prematurely, adding that he believes any government that emerges from this election
will be better than the Rudd government.

Fed: Judge warns of difficulties in honour killing cases

SYDNEY, April 15 AAP - Australian courts face difficulties in dealing with honour killing
crimes and forced marriage cases, Chief Justice of the NSW Supreme Court James Spigelman
says.

Speaking at the University of New South Wales in Sydney on Thursday night, Justice
Spigelman said there is a "fundamental conflict" between tolerance of cultural traditions
and human rights when it comes to such cases.

Unlike in Britain, where forced marriage has been outlawed, Australia lacks the laws
to deal with them.

"There is a fundamental conflict between a human rights approach to these matters,
on the one hand, and the tolerance of cultural traditions, based on the assumption of
an equality between cultures on the other hand," Justice Spigelman said.

"There is no way of avoiding the dilemma arising from this conflict of values."

Justice Spigelman cited the case of a Jordanian man accused of attempting to hire a
person to kill his niece, who had ended her forced marriage and started a relationship
with another man.

The sentencing posed "acute issues" as to how much the cultural sense of disgrace experienced
by the man should be taken into account.

"These are difficult issues calling for judgment based on experience," Justice Spigelman said.

"However, that experience must also be informed by the broader social context, including
the emphasis now being given to preventing violence against women, even if motivated by
cultural considerations."

Fed: Aussie soldier named by UK Defence

CANBERRA, Dec 19 AAP - An Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan while fighting with
British defence forces has been named as Stuart Nash, from Sydney.

The 21-year-old has been described as a promising young soldier, by UK Secretary of
Defence John Hutton.

Rifleman Nash was injured in combat on Wednesday and died during his evacuation by
a medical emergency response helicopter.

The UK Ministry of Defence said Rifleman Nash was wounded when covering his comrades
from a compound rooftop in Zarghun Kalay, in the Helmand province.

One of them, Corporal Joseph Nash (no relation), described his colleague as a "professional
and a soldier in the best traditions of Australia and Britain".

"He was shot whilst calling out target indications and returning fire, all the time
under heavy enemy fire," he said.

Rifleman Nash, who was a dual Australian-British citizen, joined his battalion in Afghanistan
three months ago.

UK military commanders described Rifleman Nash as an intelligent, ambitious soldier
who showed great potential and experience for his young age.

Mr Hutton said he was "extremely saddened" to hear of the soldier's death.

"I understand he was a most promising young soldier who served his country with courage
and honour," he said in a statement.

Shattered parents Bill and Amanda Nash said their son was doing what he most wanted
to do in life, after joining military cadets at the age of 13.

He joined the UK forces as a willing volunteer to get a better opportunity to do "real
soldiering".

A spokeswoman for the British Ministry of Defence told AAP it was unclear when Rifleman
Nash's body would be returned to Australia.

Vic: NZ firefighter injury probe announced

By Danny Rose

MELBOURNE, Dec 18 AAP - An investigation has been launched into how a group of New
Zealand firefighters were injured while fighting Victoria's fires, as three remained in
a Melbourne hospital's burns unit today.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) said the probe would take in
the fire's movements and whether the men were wearing the proper safety equipment.

Eleven New Zealand firefighters suffered burns and smoke inhalation when the fire front
turned on them as they fought a spot fire near Mansfield, in the state's north, on Saturday.

DSE fires chief officer Ewan Waller said the men reacted in accordance with their training
which had minimised their injuries.

"The main fire started to pick up and it came towards them, they took evasive action,
some escaped the site, others got caught," Mr Waller said today.

"They covered themselves up and waited for the first lot of fire to go over them and
then the second lot of fire - which has the more stronger radiant heat - that's what caused
the damage."

Mr Waller stopped short of stating the men were all wearing gloves and masks.

"We won't speculate on that because, for example, in the brief conversation we've had
one of the men got burned through his gloves.

"(The heat) baked the hand to some degree."

The trapped men took refuge in a ditch while the flames roared over their heads, and
they were later rescued by a helicopter.

Three of the men - Nick McCabe, Barrie Hunt and John Tupura - remained in The Alfred
hospital today where they have mainly superficial face and hand injuries.

One man was also scheduled for surgery this afternoon to treat a deep burn to his hand.

Mr Waller said all of the NZ firefighters were under the control of managers with local
knowledge of the area, and the probe would take several weeks to complete.

The findings could hold implications for any further deployment of foreign firefighters
in Victoria, and Mr Waller said there were plans to fly in up to 300 personnel from America
and Canada early next year.

"We're not saying anything did go wrong," Mr Waller said of the New Zealand firefighters'
incident.

"It could have happened to any of our firefighters."

Mr McCabe gave an interview to a New Zealand radio station today in which he made light
of his injuries and said such close-shave incidents were part of the job.

"It's like every job, you just handle things, do your training, and it comes out fine,"

he told Radio Live via telephone from his bed.

"Oh, heck, I'm up walking around and having a bit of a laugh. I've just had a bit of
tea ... I'm pretty comfortable."

The DSE website says there are four major fires still burning out of control in Victoria's
north and east, with a further 52 rated as contained.

These fires, which were started by lightning strikes, have burnt out almost 700,000
hectares, mostly in the Great Dividing Range and The Alpine National Park.

Victoria Police also said today an information van would tour the Gippsland towns of
Walhalla and Erica tomorrow, as they work to find the arsonist believed responsible for
a bushfire burning in Coopers Creek.

That fire began last Thursday and 48-year-old Donald Dosser, of Longford, died after
he fell off a trailer while battling the blaze.

Fed: DFAT reissues travel advice to US

CANBERRA, Aug 11 AAP - The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has reissued
travel advice to the US amid the latest terror scare in the UK.

DFAT has not upgraded the overall level of advice, but again warned Australians in
the US and those travelling there to be alert to their own security.

"Exercise common sense and look out for suspicious behaviour, as you would in Australia,"

DFAT said.

"The United States Department of Homeland Security has raised the threat level for
flights originating in the United Kingdom bound for the United States to Code Red, (the
highest tier of a five-tier, colour-coded system) indicating a "severe" risk of terrorist
attacks. Enhanced airport security procedures are in place."

"For all other commercial aviation operating in the United States or destined for the
United States, the threat level has been raised to Code Orange (the second highest level),
indicating a "high" risk of terrorist attacks."

The department said that the general threat advisory level for the US remained at "yellow"

- the middle level, meaning there is a "significant" threat of a terrorist attack.

A plot to bomb up to 10 passenger planes bound for the US was foiled in the United
Kingdom yesterday.

overinvestment Excessive investment of capital, especially in the manufacturing industry towards the end of a boom as a result of over-optimistic expectations of future demand. When the boom begins to fade, the manufacturer is left with surplus capacity and can therefore make no further capital investments, which itself creates unemployment and fuels the imminent recession. It is often seen with new technology investment booms.

DEALMAKER AIMS TO MAKE BUCKS FROM USN MESS: CAN HE MAINTAIN RED-HOT TRACK RECORD IN CHICAGO TELECOM MARKETPLACE?(Barclay Knapp to combine operations of USN Communications Inc., MegsInet Inc. and CoreComm Ltd.)

Cellular telephones were a luxury in 1987 when Barclay Knapp figured out a way to broaden the market by leasing the $2,000 phones, making them more affordable.

Such smart marketing helped him and his partners grow Ohio's Cellular Communications Inc. (CCI) into one of the largest independent U.S. cellular operators before it sold for $2.5 billion in 1996 to a predecessor of California-based AirTouch Communications Inc.

Now, they plan to use two less-than-promising Chicago companies -- financially ailing USN Communications Inc. and tiny Internet service provider MegsInet Inc. -- to jump-start their latest venture, New York-based CoreComm Ltd., a CCI spinoff.

Their ambition: to build a national franchise selling bundled telephone, wireless and Internet services to homes and businesses.

``What we're really building is the telephone company for tomorrow,'' Mr. Knapp, CoreComm's 42-year-old CEO, told analysts and investors last week.

His claim echoes those of dozens of upstart telecom companies tackling entrenched giants in deregulated markets.

Indeed, MegsInet and USN had similar goals. Now awash in red ink, USN filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Feb. 19, concurrent with the CoreComm sale agreement, which must win Bankruptcy Court approval.

Yet investors and financiers are watching Mr. Knapp and

his New York-based partners, George Blumenthal and William Ginsberg, with more than passing interest.

Mr. Knapp is also CEO of another CCI spinoff: New York-based NTL Inc., a highly leveraged operator of British cable and telephone systems that's raised some $5 billion in debt and equity to finance a network and acquisitions.

``These guys know how to market and how to consolidate a market,'' says Alan Snyder of San Francisco-based Snyder Capital Management L.P., a value investor with a 14.9% stake in CoreComm.

Since taking NTL public in 1993, they've gobbled competitors, acquiring franchises to provide service to 22% of homes in the U.K.. With revenues of $727 million last year, NTL is the United Kingdom's No. 3 operator of cable and local telephone systems behind Cable & Wireless plc and Telewest Communications plc, both based in London.

``They've put all the pieces together in NTL,'' says Salvatore Muoio of New York's S. Muoio & Co. LLC, a telecom value investor with stakes in NTL and CoreComm.

Their investors have made a bundle. Stockholders who bought Ohio's CCI for a split-adjusted $5 a share when it went public in 1986 were bought out at $55 per share a decade later.

If they kept the shares of spinoffs -- including what are now CoreComm and NTL -- they hold the combined equivalent of more than $140 for each original CCI share.

Says Mr. Snyder: ``Every one has been a home run.''

`Localism and focus count'

Nonetheless, CoreComm's success is far from assured.

The company plans to combine MegsInet's budding 57-city national network with USN's business customers and CoreComm's operations in Ohio, where it sells telephone, wireless and Internet services to homes and businesses.

CoreComm initially will focus on the Midwest. ``We aren't going to overextend ourselves,'' Mr. Knapp says. ``We know that localism and focus count.''

CoreComm is hardly alone in aiming to build a network to deliver one-stop shopping.

``There are a lot of companies attempting to implement the same strategy,'' notes David Kronfeld of Chicago venture capital firm JK&B Capital. Competitors range from giant New Jersey-based AT&T Corp., which is buying Colorado's Tele-Communications Inc., to private independents such as Chicago's 21st Century Telecom Group Inc., which recently agreed to buy Enteract LLC, a locally based Internet service provider.

Like CoreComm, dozens of competitive local carriers are buying or building pieces of networks -- telephone switches, gateways, fiber loops -- rather than simply reselling an incumbent carrier's service. USN's failure illustrated the difficulty of surviving on slim resale margins (Crain's, Feb. 15).

To succeed, CoreComm must persuade USN's small and mid-sized business customers to give up the reliability of a regional Bell carrier's resold service for an untested newcomer's network.

Most competitive local carriers ``haven't fully appreciated how difficult it is to get a residential or small business customer to switch,'' says Mr. Kronfeld.

Mr. Knapp's admirers say he and his now-seasoned management team will succeed because they combine marketing savvy with proven back-office and systems capabilities developed in Britain and Ohio.

Financial savvy

The name of the game is ``management, management, management,'' says investor Mr. Snyder.

Add to that financial smarts and the ability to tap capital markets.

CoreComm Ltd. was spun off in August with $150 million in cash from CoreComm Inc. (Puerto Rico's leading cellular provider and an earlier CCI spinoff) plus $150 million in bank debt.

CoreComm Ltd. agreed to pay up to $85 million in cash plus CoreComm warrants for USN. The MegsInet transaction is an estimated $55-million cash-and-stock deal, with just $18.5 million of that in cash.

Says Mr. Knapp: ``We have a good feel for customers and customer service, a good feel for technology and the financial acumen to apply a lot of capital to a good opportunity.''

COLLEGE OF AMERICAN PATHOLOGISTS PUTS MEDICAL REMINDERS IN THE HANDS OF AMERICANS THROUGH MYHEALTHTESTREMINDER.ORG.

NORTHFIELD, IL. -- The following information was released by the College of American Pathologists:

More and more people use mobile devices to manage their daily lives. In fact, according to the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project, 65 percent of Americans even sleep with their cell phonesumany using the modern day necessity as alarm clocks.

Today, the College of American Pathologists, the world's largest association of board-certified pathologists, announced a new service available on its website, MyHealthTestReminder.org. Taking less than one minute, visitors to the site can sign up to receive a free text message reminding them to schedule important health screening tests to the devices they use most-their cell phones.

"MyHealthTestReminder.org serves as a 'medical alarm clock' for individuals, prompting them to schedule health screening tests that are essential to their health and well-being," said Stephen N. Bauer, MD, FCAP, president of the College of American Pathologists. "Putting off or avoiding screening tests such as a colonoscopy or Pap test can delay treatment options for patients, or in some instances, lead to death."

Pathologists are doctors and diagnostic experts who examine cells, tissues, and body fluids to diagnosis diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. They are essential members of the patient care team and serve as interpreters of medical laboratory tests to help guide a patient's treatment and care.

In the ever-changing world of health care reform, individuals can take charge of their health by scheduling important health screening tests to enhance and/or prolong their life, as well as head off the expense of hefty health care costs down the road to treat a disease in its advanced stage.

Scheduling a reminder is easy and convenient. It's as simple as 1-2-3:

Register at MyHealthTestReminder.org.

Select the type of reminder and day that you would like to be reminded.

Receive your reminder through a text message to your cell phone and/or with an email.

Visitors to MyHealthTestReminder.org can schedule reminders for a mammogram; Pap test; cholesterol test; and colon cancer, prostate cancer, and diabetes screenings tests, as well as make a blood donation. MyHealthTestReminder.org is available in English and Spanish.

While the use of cell phones continues to increase, receiving health screening tests unfortunately has not. The common excuses are centered on being too busy, fearful, or embarrassed. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that more than half of all Americans over the age of 50 who should have received colon cancer screening tests have not.

"As a physician who specializes in pathology, I know that screening tests save lives. In fact, with early detection and treatment of colon cancer, 5-year survival rates can be as high as 90 percent," said Dr. Bauer. "We are hoping that through MyHealthTestReminder.org more lives can be saved."

Visitors to MyHealthTestReminder.org can also access the CAP's website, MyBiopsy.org. The site was developed by pathologists to provide individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones accurate and credible information to help them better understand their diagnoses. Currently, the site houses information on more than 40 of the most common cancers and cancer-related conditions.

The College of American Pathologists is a medical society serving nearly 18,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. It is the world's largest association composed exclusively of board-certified pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The College is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective patient care.

From Sulfurcell to Soltecture: A New Generation of Solar Construction.

CIS thin-film specialist presents at Intersolar Europe (Booth A1/161):

* Aerodynamic flat-roof solution (<2.85 lbs/ftU)

* TouV certified CIGSe high performance module (xxxx 85W)

* High-End mounting system for small roofs

BERLIN & MUNICH -- Ten years after its founding, CIS thin-film pioneer Sulfurcell is breaking new ground in solar construction under its new corporate name, Soltecture. At Intersolar Europe, the company is presenting standardized system solutions allowing intelligent integration of high performance and visual appeal in its CIS thin-film modules. Residential rooftop panels, industrial building systems, facade usage: all applications are high-performing, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to install. As reflected in its new corporate name, Soltecture reconfirms its own high standard for maximum performance in solar energy, technology, and architecture.

Flat roof system:

Aerodynamic lightweight with a powerful output

The new flat roof system from Soltecture enables previously unusable lightweight roofs with low load bearing capacities to be utilized for photovoltaic systems. With 46 kWp per 10,000 ftU, it is extremely powerful and, because it is not restricted by the direction in which the building is oriented, it can be oriented in a southerly direction without any additional expenditure. The system weighs less than 2.85 lbs/ftU. The design was optimized by means of intensive tests in a wind tunnel to enable the necessary ballast to be reduced to a minimum without reducing the stability. Because it is not necessary to penetrate the roof surface in order to fix the structure, the PV system can also be used on roofs covered in bituminous sheeting, gravel or roof membranes. Compared with other flat roof systems on the market, the solution from Soltecture provides the most prefabrication. The system can be installed on the roof without tools and in just a few easy steps. This means that considerably less effort is required for the installation than with conventional systems that first of all require a substructure to be constructed in order to screw down the modules.

Roof-mounted system: Quickly and efficiently to your desired solution

SOL-30, the high-end mounting system for framed Soltecture solar modules, enables tool-free and therefore quick and cost-effective installation on any roof: the modules are not screwed but inserted in special horizontal profiles that ensure excellent rear ventilation and removal of snow. In addition, the connection with the horizontal profiles ensures tension-free mounting of the individual modules. This enables the modules to unleash their full performance capabilities and impress through high yields and long service life, which in turn considerably increases the investment security. In addition to its functional properties, SOL-30 also meets the highest aesthetic demands: combined with the black corrosion-resistant aluminum in the visible part of the system (cover strips and end caps), a particularly attractive, lasting impression is created. The patented process makes it easy to expand the system and we've even thought about security: SOL-30 also comes supplied with the SOL GUARD theft protection system.

SOLutions:

Planning everywhere and at any time

With SOLutions, Soltecture offers planners and installers a free, Internet-based planning tool that is always available. This enables every customer wish to be individually, quickly, and precisely planned - from any computer with an Internet connection, whether at your desk or on site by the customer. The software covers the system planning, comprehensive inverter configuration, and detailed documentation of the entire project.

The planning possibilities provided by SOLutions range from the structural calculation of wind and snow loads to DIN 1055 to the consideration of spatial impediments such as windows or dormers. To enable customers to gain an impression of their solar power system as soon as possible, the tool even directly creates a professional presentation of the new roof appearance.

The system calculates the material demand and all project necessary units, provides suggestions for interconnection, creates a string-plan, and a circuit diagram. In addition, SOLutions puts together all important documents for the project, such as inspection documents, EVU-application, all test certificates, and system images, among others. This will allow for precise generation of all requests, proposals, and orders.

Peak performance with CIGSe: A lightweight with maximum efficiency

Soltecture reaches worldwide peak results with thin-film solar modules based on CIGSe semiconductors (Copper, Indium, Gallium, and Selenium). The best modules currently in production attain a module efficiency of 13.0% based on aperture area, and 12% based on total module area.

With CIGSe, Soltecture taps into the highest efficiency potential in the realm of thin-film production. In the coming ten to sixteen months, module-efficiency will be increased to more than 14%. Production yields will increase to over 90%. The basis for this success is a new, high-efficiency production process that impressively reconfirms Soltecture's position as one of the leading industrial players in the field of CIS Photovoltaics. Our production process, based exclusively in Germany, is carried out to meet the standards set by the semiconductor industry. This allows Soltecture to guarantee its customers a product warranty of ten years and a twenty-five-year performance warranty.

About Soltecture

Berlin, Germany-based Soltecture is a leading manufacturer of CIS-based thin-film solar modules and provider of complete system solutions for solar construction. Evolved from the thin-film pioneer Sulfurcell, important technological milestones have shaped the company history:

From the early module market introduction of thin-film modules based on CIS semiconductors in 2005 and the ramp-up of three fabrication lines to recent record efficiencies of 13.0 percent. The company has sold over 100,000 modules for projects in Europe, China, India and USA.

Soltecture, which was founded in 2001, is a spin-off from the Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy. With 250 employees, the company is now globally one of the leading manufacturers of thin-film solar power modules based on CIS semiconductors. Soltecture has received multiple awards for its cutting edge research and product development. The UK's Guardian newspaper recently once again listed the Berlin company among the "hottest 100 clean technology companies in Europe". In recent years, renowned international investors, including Intel Capital, Climate Change Capital, and the of Vattenfall Europe- and GdF Suez-supported BEU Fund, have provided Soltecture growth financing amounting to more than 110 million euros. This fresh capital has been utilized for constructing new production facilities and for research and development. Further information is available at: www.soltecture.com.

Vodafone and Alcatel-Lucent team up to develop smart metering in Germany.

M2 PRESSWIRE-11 December 2009-Alcatel Lucent: Vodafone and Alcatel-Lucent team up to develop smart metering in Germany(C)1994-2009 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

RDATE:10122009

Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Germany -- Vodafone Germany and Alcatel-Lucent today announced they will work together to develop an extensive offer for the German market that makes smarter use of energy by enabling consumers to access real-time information about their energy usage and make more informed decisions about their energy consumption of electricity, gas and water. Both subsidiaries will be marketing the smart metering offer as a managed service through their respective sales organizations and will promote the benefits that this service can bring to the energy sector.

The smart metering managed service will enable German utilities to adhere to recent and forthcoming European Union's rules and will be implemented for the first time by Stadtwerke Pasewalk, a municipal utility that operates in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The new service offering is the result of matching the core competencies of the two companies. In this engagement Alcatel-Lucent, through its German subsidiary, is providing its Smart Metering Management System SMM 8617 as well as its services expertise to integrate all the components of the planned smart metering service into a seamless solution, including the connection to the operational management systems of energy suppliers (Enterprise Resource Planning - ERP and Energy Data Management - EDM).

Vodafone Germany provides a secure connection between the intelligent meters -- installed in consumer households -- and the Smart Metering Management System. This type of Machine-to-Machine-Communication (M2M) will be realized over a fixed-line DSL connection or a wireless GPRS connection and will be managed over a highly available M2M service platform.

'The Machine-to-Machine communications market is expanding and smart metering is one of the most promising segments in the future, not alone because of EU rules. We are present in this segment in Germany with strong partners like Alcatel-Lucent and our specialized M2M product portfolio,' says Thomas Strehl, Senior Business Development Manager Industry & New Business, Vodafone Germany.

Underlining the benefits of the partnership, Christof Hecker, VP Sales Vodafone for Germany, Benelux, Eastern Europe, Alcatel-Lucent says 'The partnership with Vodafone and Alcatel-Lucent will enable our customers to shape energy demand patterns in the future and meet their "green agenda" by integrating our smart metering service offering'.

The German subsidiaries of Vodafone and Alcatel-Lucent intend to develop their cooperation beyond the energy supplier market and are working closely on innovative smart metering solutions that would apply to the health care field, specifically in patient monitoring or for applications in the development of electric cars.

Indiana-Based Tokheim Corp. Reports Quarterly Profit.(Originated from The News-Sentinel, Fort Wayne, Ind.)

FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Apr. 3--Increased sales and progress in its consolidation with an acquired European gas pump maker enabled Tokheim Corp. to post first-quarter profits of $100,000 today.

It was the first time in six years that the Fort Wayne-based gas pump manufacturer reported a first-quarter profit, said Douglas K. Pinner, chairman, president, and chief executive officer.

Last year, the company reported a first-quarter loss of $700,000.

After preferred dividends, the Fort Wayne-based gas pump manufacturer saw a loss per share of 3 cents for the quarter ended Feb. 28, compared with a loss of 13 cents a share for the year-ago period.

First-quarter earnings before interest, depreciation, amortization and taxes totaled $5.7 million vs. $1.3 million last year.

Sales typically slow for gas dispensing equipment during the quarter as service station construction drops during cold weather, Pinner said.

Operating profit showed substantial gains at $3.8 million for the quarter vs. a loss of $400,000 last year. Those operating profits were more than 1.5 times interest expense for the quarter.

Tokheim reported first-quarter sales of $92 million, 85 percent more than the $49.5 million reported first quarter of 1996. This is the first full quarter including the results of Sofitam International, the French-based service station equipment manufacturer acquired last year.

Pinner said its first-quarter results were particularly gratifying considering the cold winter that hit Europe. The weather delayed construction activity and hurt sales in that important market, he said.

Sogen, the merged European operations of Tokheim and the French- based Sofitam, saw a loss in sales in the quarter because of adverse weather.

With that exception, sales across all other areas of the Tokheim's businesses were in line with expectations, Pinner said. Domestic sales and operating performance continued to improve, he said.

The company's balance sheet at the end of the quarter showed marked improvement, Pinner said, as initiatives to increase efficiency of the merged businesses began to yield early results.

Those included inventory reductions and improved receivables management, which contributed to improved cash flow.

Looking forward, Tokheim officials expect to increase penetration of the major oil company community through growth from the Sofitam acquisition.

The companies' combined strengths in technology, product offerings, service capabilities and geographic presence will give it an edge in competition for that business, Pinner said.

Growth with major oil companies will complement Tokheim's strength in the distributor sales segment of the market, he said.

"All the benefits we anticipated from the merger have not only been met but exceeded."

Alvarion, Comfone, and Iberbanda showcase dual-technology roaming of mobile WiMAX and Wi-Fi based upon Intel silicon.(WIMAX FORUM)

Alvarion Ltd., a provider of WiMAX and wireless broadband solutions, announced that it has joined forces with Comfone, Iberbanda, and Intel to demonstrate dual-technology roaming of Wi-Fi and mobile WiMAX. Taking advantage of a large Wi-Fi install base with everywhere hotspots and imminent mobile WiMAX services, visitors at Mobile World Congress were able to experience the seamless roaming between these two technologies. The demonstration also showed a real-life usage of Web 2.0 applications over mobile WiMAX.

Mobile WiMAX and Wi-Fi roaming allows users to benefit from enhanced coverage by using two types of broadband wireless technologies. Operators can offer services to the large Wi-Fi install base with smooth migration to WiMAX services. The live demonstration was made possible through the Intel WiMAX Connection 2250 chip integrated into Alvarion's 4Motion solution, running over the 3.5GHz spectrum provided by Iberbanda--the most available spectrum in Europe for WiMAX applications.

Comfone, a provider of GSM and public WLAN roaming, provided public WLAN access points connected to its Wi-Fi roaming platform, as well as the public WLAN accounts used for the roaming demonstration. This demonstration illustrated how a user, using a single account, will be able to roam between WiMAX and WLAN in the future.

"Naturally, we feel at home showcasing here in Barcelona, yet even more so because we are collaborating with our close partners Alvarion and Intel," said Mr. Luis Miguel Garcia Sanchez, CEO of Iberbanda. "As always we are dedicated to providing broadband services to our customers, and see the great importance of WiMAX-Wi-Fi roaming, which can enable both wireless broadband connectivity locally, and the extension of services to the metropolitan area network. As a result our subscribers will be able to enjoy an always- best-connected experience."

"We are pleased to see this type of innovation in the wireless broadband space," said Raviv Melamed, general manager, Mobile Wireless Group, Intel Corporation. "This demo highlights the complementary nature of WiMAX and Wi-Fi, and serves as a benchmark for further development of seamless WiMAX/Wi-Fi roaming." "Presenting extended coverage possibilities enabled by WiMAX/Wi-Fi roaming together with industry leaders as Iberbanda and Intel, is a great opportunity for all visitors at Mobile World Congress to experience the advantages of combining these technologies," said Tzvika Friedman, president and CEO of Alvarion. "Our 4Motion solution and OPEN WiMAX architecture can serve as an ideal all-IP platform for various services, such as Web 2.0 applications, and enable an enhanced Internet experience with a variety of exciting mobile devices."
