Main stories in Monday's World Today
SYDNEY, Aug 23 AAP - Main stories in Monday's World Today:
* As votes continue to be counted in several seats across the country, it looks as
if both Labor and the Coalition will be deadlocked with 73 seats each as three of the
independent candidates head to Canberra to negotiate forming a government. Both parties
have publicly promoted their policy platforms in a bid to win over independent support,
with the Labor Party pushing its national broadband network and the Coalition arguing
the government has lost its legitimacy.
* South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon says the latest election campaign was frequently
trivialised and didn't deal with core issues. Xenophon says the presence of three independent
candidates in the lower house will provide democracy with a breath of fresh air and lead
to more conscious votes.
* Former NSW Labor minister Rodney Cavalier says support for Labor collapsed in Saturday's
election but disagrees that the dumping of Kevin Rudd was the reason for the swing against
the party. Cavalier says he thinks anybody who calls the election right now is doing so
far too prematurely, adding that he believes any government that emerges from this election
will be better than the Rudd government.
