BKB: Jackson fires Opals to opening win at Games
ATHENS, Aug 14 AAP - Superstar Lauren Jackson led Australia to an 85-73 victory over
Nigeria in the opening match of the Olympic women's basketball tournament today.
The Opals led at every change but had to withstand a last-quarter surge by the African
champions, who briefly got within seven points in the match at the Helleniko Indoor Arena.
Jackson, who last year became the first non-American to win the most valuable player
award in the WNBA, led the scoring with a game-high 27 points.
Suzy Batkovic and Penny Taylor each scored 11 points for the Opals, although Taylor
did get into early foul trouble.
Mfon Udoka had 24 points for Nigeria and Mactabene Amachree scored 17.
The Opals won the silver medal at the Sydney Games and are considered strong medal
hopes in Athens.
